So You Got Married… Now What About Your Name?
You’ve said “I do” and popped the champagne. But now comes the question a lot of newlyweds face:
“Am I changing my name… and how do I even do that?”
The good news is, it’s actually much easier than most people think. I’ve done it myself.
Here is a break down…
Do You Have to Change Your Name?
Short answer: Absolutely not.
In Australia, changing your name after marriage is completely optional. You can:
Keep your current name
Take your partner’s surname
Hyphenate (e.g. Smith-Jones)
Or even socially use a different name without legally changing it
There’s no “right” choice, just what feels right for you.
The Key Document You’ll Need
If you do decide to change your surname after marriage, the most important thing is:
!! Your Official Marriage Certificate (from BDM)
Not the pretty ceremonial one you signed on the day—that’s just for keepsakes.
You’ll need to apply for the registered marriage certificate through: NSW Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages (BDM). As your Celebrant (all states are different however this is applicable in NSW) I can apply for it on your behalf when I lodge your Marriage details and all legal documents. This saves you the time of having to do it.
Once you have that, it becomes your proof to update your name everywhere else.
Where Do You Change Your Name?
There’s no single “one-click” system (unfortunately), so you’ll need to update your name across different places.
Start with the big ones:
1. Driver Licence (Service NSW)
This is usually the first stop.
Bring your marriage certificate
Update your licence (often free or low cost)
2. Passport
Managed through the Australian Passport Office
If your passport is still valid, you may be able to replace it at a reduced fee
3. Medicare & ATO
Can often be updated online via myGov
4. Banks & Super
Visit a branch or upload documents online
5. Everything Else
Think:
Insurance
Utilities
Work/payroll
Email & social media (optional but satisfying and usually done the morning after)
Is There a Time Limit?
Nope!
There’s no deadline to change your name after marriage in NSW. You can do it:
Straight after the wedding
Months later
Even years down the track
Take your time… especially if you’re heading off on a honeymoon (pro tip: travel under your current passport name!).
What If You Want a Completely Different Name?
If you want a name that’s not your partner’s surname (or a variation of it), you’ll need to:
Apply for an official change of name through BDM
This is a separate legal process and comes with:
An application
Identity checks
A fee
Final Thoughts
Changing your name is one of those deeply personal decisions that sits somewhere between tradition and identity.
Some people can’t wait to share a surname.
Others want to keep their name exactly as it is.
And some land somewhere in between.
Whatever you choose, it’s your call.
